Lincoln Safari Details

Lincoln Safari will get families and other groups of people off the couch and into unstructured corners and hidden places within Lincoln thus encouraging a sense of exploration and discovery. It will provide opportunities throughout the year to experience the natural environments in the Lincoln community.

When a family or group registers to participate they will receive a safari satchel that contains: a map, a safari guidebook, a package of crayons, and a pencil. Registrations will be taken at all public libraries beginning December 15, 2007. The winter safari sites will be available January 1, 2008.

There are 35 safari spots. Many are accessible by city bus with a minimum of walking. Some are accessible from the hiker biker trails; some are right on our city streets. Groups are encouraged to walk, skip, bike, roller skate, and skateboard to these locations All 35 sites are marked on the safari map with a different symbol.

These symbols:
1. Identify the safari site on the map.
2. Identify the clue for the site in the guidebook.
3. Match the rubbing plate on top of the post at the safari site.

Several sites will have a souvenir given away as a reward for visiting that site. In order to collect the souvenir, participants must make a rubbing of the symbol on the post at the site in their guidebook. The directions for collecting the souvenir, if there is one, are on the post. One souvenir will be given per family. Souvenirs include animal tracking guides, water bottles, booklets, balls, view finders... and other helpful outdoor “tools.”

In addition to the souvenirs given away at some of the safari sites everyone participating in the Lincoln Safari will be entered into a drawing for prizes. These include but are not limited to these prizes donated by ewins.com: (pictures on these websites)

Each Lincoln Safari partner will host events throughout the 2008 calendar year – these events will be listed on this website beginning in January, 2008. At each event there will be an opportunity for Lincoln Safari participants to register to win a prize. Just by participating in partner events you can win a prize!

For groups visiting all 35 sites there will be a special drawing for:

Registration will be at the 2008 Winter Weekends at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo.

Families, Scout groups, church groups, book clubs, and individuals - all are welcome and encouraged to participate.
